The Pestana Palace Hotel certainly deserves its place in the association of "Leading Hotels in the World." The Palace was almost in ruins when it was rescued by private investors a few years ago and declared a national monument by the Portuguese government. However, the one major disappointment is that most of the rooms are in modern extensions, albeit with a view onto a tropical garden. Furthermore, unlike the modern extension at the very similar Galle Face Hotel, Sri Lanka, this extension is not quite up to palatial standards: carpet rather than hardwood or tiles, TV that has clearly seen better days. Time to go roughing it a bit... One is getting to be too difficult.
